Things to do in and around Exmouth

EXMOUTH TOWN is full of quirky shops, colourful parks and gardens, an award winning indoor market and of course 2 miles of sandy beach.

SPORTS available include Bowling, Tennis and an 18 hole Pitch and Putt all within a 10 minute walk of Carberry Lodge.

WALKING AND CYCLING. We are less than 200m from the East Devon Way and the start of the Exe Estuary Trail which allows a very pleasant walk (approx 30 mins) or cycle, to Historic Lympstone village with its pubs and tea room, or continue to Exton for the more energetic. The Exe Estuary trail is also part of National Cycle Route 2. We can offer secure cycle storage. We are also close to the South West Coast Path

NATURE. Carberry Lodge has views over the Exmouth Nature Reserve with its flocks of birds which is less than 200m from the house. In the moors on the outskirts of Exmouth is Bystock Nature Reserve with ponds and moorland habitat. Topsham also has a nature reserve and is a short car, bus or train journey.

SAILING AND POWER BOATING, Wind, and Kite Surfing, Kayaking and Diving – Stay with us while you learn or advance your skills in any of these activities.

GARDENS; our own garden won the guest house category in Exmouth in Bloom in 2008 and 2009 and Exmouth Town won Best Coastal Town in Britain in Bloom 2008. Many gardens around Exmouth also take part in the National Gardens Scheme. Bicton Park Botanic Gardens with 63 acres of gardens and its own railway is a 20 minute drive away.

RIVER AND COASTAL CRUISES are run all year by Stuart Line Cruises and also special bird watching trips. There are also ferries to Starcross on the opposite side of the estuary from where you can walk to Powderham Castle. The water taxi will drop you off on the sand of Dawlish Warren

There are many National Trust properties in Devon, on the outskirts of Exmouth is the quirky 16 sided house A-La-Ronde

ENTERTAINMENT – Exmouth has an amateur theatre company at the Blackmore Theatre. The Exmouth Pavilion on the sea front has live music and shows and the Savoy cinema has all the latest film releases. There are also theatres in nearby Exeter including the renowned Northcott Theatre

PLACES TO VISIT AROUND EXMOUTH – Why not visit our neighbouring town Budleigh Salterton with its quaint architecture and unique thatched museum. From Budleigh you can walk up the Otter valley alongside the nature reserve, or drive, to the picturesque village of Otterton where you can visit Otterton Mill for crafts and refreshment in their restaurant or to East Budleigh the birth place of Sir Walter Raleigh. Further on is Sidmouth with the world famous Donkey Sanctuary close by. Exeter City is only 10 miles away with its cathedral , shops, entertainment etc. and nearby Westpoint Arena has regular exhibitions and shows.

TRAVEL

TRAINS – There are direct routes from Exmouth to Paignton and Barnstaple, so why not have a day out on the Avocet and Tarka lines or enjoy the Steam experience on the Dart Valley Railway travelling from Paignton to Kingswear and by ferry to Dartmouth. You can watch the Torbay Express Steam Specials steam down the West side of the estuary through Starcross and Dawlish Warren from Carberry Lodge, you might even see the new Steam Engine Tornado

BUSES run from Exmouth to Exeter and also direct to Sidmouth via Budleigh Salterton or change buses at Sidford for the whole Jurassic Coast including Beer, Lyme Regis and Weymouth.

DRIVE – Exeter is a 20 minute drive away with Dartmoor approx 40 minutes away and Exmoor 75 minutes

PLANE – Exeter Airport is a half hour taxi ride from Exmouth
